A Simple Way To Train Yourself To Be More Creative

“Others have seen what is and asked why.
I have seen what could be and asked why not.”

- Pablo Picasso

Nowadays, we’re forever hearing how vital creativity is to success. But what if you’re not that kind of person? Well. Think again. A creative person is a person who creates things. You don’t have to be an artist, popsinger, designer or a mad scientist. You can train yourself to be more creative.

But let´s start with a story.

In late 1971, Bill and Barbara Bowerman were having breakfast when it dawned on him that the grooves in the waffle iron she was using would be an excellent mould for a running shoe. Bowerman, who was Co-founder of Nike and a track and field coach at the time, had been searching for a way to make shoes lighter and faster.
"As one of the waffles came out, he said, 'You know, by turning it upside down – where the waffle part would come in contact with the track – I think that might work,'" Barbara told Reames in a 2006 interview for the Department of Nike Archives. "So, he got up from the table and went tearing into his lab and got two cans of whatever it is you poured together to make the urethane and poured them into the waffle iron."

Nike's Waffle Trainer debuted in 1974. The rubber spikes didn't tear up the track, and the shoe worked for every type of surface." Bill Bowerman became a shoe legend.

The point?

Creativity is the ability to bring new and valuable things into being. That is a skill that can be learned. As simple as that. Research involving identical twins suggests that only about 20-25% of our creative ability is genetically driven. So, go now and talk to 10 different people from 10 different diverse perspectives, observe the world systematically, take notes and pictures, write down in a journal thing that you see, constantly ask questions. Suddenly you start seeing connections you haven’t seen before. You get insights, ideas start to fly and that’s a beautiful feeling to have, but that’s not something that comes immediately.
Practice.
Practice.
Practice.
